the struggle of writing in all caps

All Caps

This week’s post is going to be short. Like, really short. If this was a Relient K album, it would be a song that’s only in the double digits. Like Crayons Can Melt On Us For All I Care.

But here it is:

It is my honest opinion that writing in all caps makes spelling impossible. This applies whether you’re writing by hand or typing (so long as you don’t have Caps Lock on.)

As soon as you’re focused on making the letters capitalized, your brain doesn’t have space to comprehend what you’re writing. And then you end up making dumb spelling errors.

The worst part of this is that when you write in all caps, you are generally wanting to make some sort of a point. And the only point you end up making is that you cannot spell.

This may also just be my perception, but it is also nearly impossible to convey any emotion but anger when writing in all caps. A simple and possibly innocent question like “WHERE ARE YOU?” comes across as oppressive and hostile when placed in the confines of all caps. I think that is probably a product of text messaging, but there is certainly an interesting facet to how font, capitalization, and italics play a role in our perception of writing.
